Summer School on Engineering for Sustainability in Lightweight Systems

About Summer School

We are excited to invite you to the M2BRIDGE Summer School on “Engineering for Sustainability in Lightweight Systems”, taking place from 23 to 26 September 2025 in the vibrant city of Patras, Greece. This four-day international event, hosted by the University of Patras, offers an immersive learning experience designed for students, researchers, and professionals passionate about sustainable engineering.

The Summer School is jointly organized by the University of Patras and the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology (ILK) of the Technical University of Dresden, with key organizers being Assistant Professor Angelos Filippatos from the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, and Professor Maik Gude from TU Dresden.

What to Expect

This Summer School is dedicated to exploring sustainability-driven innovation in the field of lightweight systems. Through a series of interactive lectures, hands-on workshops, and expert-led discussions, participants will gain in-depth knowledge on:

  • Circular Economy and Circularity in product design and engineering

  • Environmental impact assessment of engineering structures and systems

  • Lifecycle thinking and sustainable materials in mechanical and structural applications

A central focus of the program is placed on understanding and optimizing the entire value chain and product life cycle, from initial concept and material sourcing to production, usage, and end-of-life strategies. Emphasis will be given to resource-efficient design and the responsible use of lightweight materials in both existing and emerging applications.

Beyond the academic sessions, attendees will benefit from an engaging cultural program designed to highlight the rich heritage of Greece and encourage dialogue on the societal, industrial, and technological transitions required for a more sustainable future.
